New Plymouth’s Mayor Names Fund in Honour of David Lean
Incoming New Plymouth mayor Max Brough has announced a significant tribute to his predecessor by renaming the district’s mayoral relief fund in honour of the late David Lean. The announcement took place at the Civic Centre on October 27, 2023, where Brough gathered with a small group of councillors and dignitaries.
David Lean, affectionately known as “Daisy,” served as mayor from 1980 to 1992 and passed away in June at the age of 76. Brough remarked on the importance of this moment, stating, “This is quite a big moment for me because earlier this year, after the passing of Lean, a four-term mayor of this council, there was a number of us hoping to make something meaningful to what he gave to the city.”
The renaming of the fund aims to honour Lean’s legacy and contributions to the community. With the approval of Lean’s family, Brough expressed his desire to ensure that the mayoral relief fund carries Lean’s name, thereby providing recognition of his impact on the city.
Brough highlighted the fund’s annual contribution of $5,000 from the council, but he aims to increase its resources significantly through public donations. “People are in hardship, and they need help,” he stated. “One of the things on my desk was requests for relief. They are coming thicker and faster, and I don’t think that is going to change any time soon.”
He emphasized that every cent donated for this purpose would directly assist those in need within the community.
The tribute has also resonated with Lean’s family. His widow, Janet Lean, expressed her gratitude, saying, “When I first met Daisy, he was a social worker; he wasn’t a politician. So I think, well I know, he always had a caring heart and he loved New Plymouth and was very passionate about Taranaki and its environment. So to have something to put his name to is meaningful.”
As Brough prepares to be sworn in on October 31, 2023, this initiative underscores his commitment to community support and the continuation of Lean’s legacy. The mayoral relief fund, now bearing David Lean’s name, is set to play a vital role in addressing the growing needs of residents facing challenges within the district.
