New Zealand Sheep Takes Supreme Champion Title at A&P Show
A ewe from Milton, owned by Owen Booth, has claimed the prestigious title of Supreme Champion at a recent Agricultural and Pastoral (A&P) show in New Zealand. This victory marks a notable achievement, as it is believed to be the first time a shedding sheep breed has won this honor at such an event.
The ewe, a cross between Wiltshire and Shire breeds, faced stiff competition from a Suffolk ram. Booth expressed his surprise at the win, stating, “She’s a good ewe, but I wasn’t expecting it.” The growing popularity of shedding sheep breeds has led to an increase in their participation in competitions, reflecting a shift in breeding practices within the industry.
Booth’s ewe was sired by a Wiltshire ram purchased from Andrew Heard of Waitohi Peaks in North Canterbury in 2024. Judges praised the ewe for her correctness and noted the considerable meat on her hindquarters, a critical factor for success in the show ring.
Innovative Breeding Techniques
In an effort to enhance the meat yield of his flock, Booth has incorporated shedding Texel genetics into his breeding program over the past two seasons. He emphasized the importance of this aspect in sheep farming, remarking, “The back-end is the money end.” This approach aligns with the broader trend among sheep breeders to focus on producing animals that meet market demands for quality meat.
The victory of Booth’s ewe not only highlights the capabilities of shedding breeds but also underscores the evolving landscape of sheep farming in New Zealand. As breeders experiment with different genetics, the future of the industry appears promising, with a potential shift in consumer preferences toward shedding sheep.
Overall, Booth’s success serves as an inspiration for fellow breeders and contributes to the growing recognition of shedding sheep within competitive circles. As the industry continues to evolve, it will be interesting to observe how such innovations shape the future of sheep breeding in New Zealand and beyond.
