Springboks Revamp Lineup for Must-Win Clash Against All Blacks
The Springboks face a pivotal challenge as they prepare for a crucial rematch against the All Blacks on September 13, 2023, at Sky Stadium in Wellington. Following a disappointing 24-17 defeat at Auckland’s Eden Park, the South African team must secure a victory to keep their Rugby Championship title hopes alive.
To address recent performance issues, head coach Jacques Erasmus has made several strategic changes to the lineup. Cobus Reinach will start at halfback, paired with the dynamic Feinberg-Mngomezulu. Newcomer Ethan Hooker takes up a wing position, while Damian Willemse shifts to inside centre, allowing Canan Moodie to wear the No 13 jersey. The experienced Cheslin Kolbe also returns to the wing, with Aphelele Fassi positioned at fullback.
In the forwards, Jasper Wiese rejoins the team as No 8 following a suspension. He will team up with Siya Kolisi, the captain, and Pieter-Steph du Toit in the back row. The Springboks struggled significantly in the lineouts during their previous encounter, leading to the inclusion of Lood de Jager in place of Eben Etzebeth to partner with Ruan Nortje in the locking positions. The front row features Malcolm Marx at hooker, flanked by props Ox Nche and Thomas du Toit.
Erasmus has opted for a 5-3 split between forwards and backs on the bench, although this could shift to a 6-2 configuration, with options including scrumhalf Grant Williams and first-five Manie Libbok.
“This is an exciting team, which we believe will provide us with the forward power we require, and the spark in the backline against a quality All Blacks side,” Erasmus stated. He acknowledged the team’s shortcomings from the previous match and emphasized the need for a complete 80-minute performance. “We’ll leave no stone unturned to fix those errors, and we will give everything to achieve that.”
The All Blacks will announce their lineup on Thursday, adding to the anticipation surrounding this highly competitive fixture. The stakes are high, as both teams aim to establish dominance in the Rugby Championship.
As the Springboks look to bounce back, their revised lineup reflects a commitment to improvement. With a blend of experience and youthful energy, they are set to face one of their fiercest rivals in a match that promises to be both thrilling and decisive.
