St Joseph’s Cathedral: A Sanctuary for Confession and Forgiveness
St Joseph’s Cathedral in Dunedin, New Zealand, serves as a vital space for confession and forgiveness within the Catholic community. Constructed between 1878 and 1886, it stands as the only major Gothic Revival church designed by New Zealand-born architect Francis Petre. The cathedral features a symmetrical layout with a central nave, 14 stained glass windows, and flying buttresses that provide structural support.
The cathedral houses three confessionals, still actively used today, located in the northern aisle and nestled between the buttresses of the exterior wall. Most Rev Michael Dooley, Bishop of Dunedin, explained the two forms of confession practiced within the church: individual and communal. The individual confession occurs privately between one person and a priest, while communal confession typically takes place in a group setting, particularly during significant times such as Easter and Christmas.
Many congregants continue to seek confession, often addressing issues related to addiction and relationships. Bishop Dooley emphasized that confession is one of the seven sacraments of reconciliation, celebrating the themes of God’s forgiveness and mercy. He noted, “It’s a practical and human way for us to experience it by having a rite or symbolic prayers and actions that remind us of God’s forgiveness.”
In individual confessions, individuals have the option of using a screen for anonymity. They express their thoughts and feelings of sinfulness, followed by a prayer of sorrow. The priest then recites a prayer that signifies God’s forgiveness, known as the words of absolution, and assigns a penance, which may be a prayer or action aimed at seeking forgiveness.
Bishop Dooley articulated the significance of confession within the Catholic faith, stating, “It’s a way of unburdening the soul.” The seal of confession ensures that priests cannot disclose any information shared during the process. However, if serious matters arise, the priest may request to speak with the individual outside the confessional and could potentially report the issue to the authorities.
Interestingly, priests themselves also partake in confession to seek forgiveness. This practice underlines the communal aspect of faith and the shared journey towards reconciliation. St Joseph’s Cathedral continues to be a sanctuary for individuals seeking solace, providing a place where they can confront their burdens and experience the transformative power of forgiveness.
