Young Farmers Compete for $90,000 in Exciting Challenge

Young farmers in New Zealand are set to showcase their skills in a competitive event at this weekend’s Gore A&P Show. The top eight finalists will vie for a chance to advance to the grand final, with over $90,000 in prizes at stake. This marks the 58th year of the competition, which highlights the innovation and talent within the country’s food and fibre sector.

The southern finalists include Lachlan Dudin from Thornbury Young Farmers, Hayden Smith and Thomas Slee from Nightcaps Young Farmers, Sharon Schuurmans of Thornbury Young Farmers, Henry Smith from Clinton Young Farmers, Max McCallum of Balfour Young Farmers, Harry McCallum from Te Anau Young Farmers, and Ann-Kristin Loferski from West Otago Young Farmers.

The competition will take place at the Gore Showgrounds, starting at 08:00 local time. Contestants will engage in fast-paced, head-to-head challenges, culminating in a buzzer quiz during the awards dinner at Gore Town & Country. This event not only tests the farmers’ skills but also reflects the dedication and innovation required in modern agriculture.

In addition to the main competition, the AgriKidsNZ and FMG Junior Young Farmer of the Year contests will feature emerging talents, with finalists from all categories set to advance to the grand final in July. The Gore A&P Show will also host a variety of livestock exhibits, including cattle, horses, pigs, goats, and birds, allowing attendees to appreciate the breadth of New Zealand’s agricultural landscape.

The Ayrshire South Island Championships will be a highlight of the dairy section, while the Hokonui Pavilion will showcase an array of baking, preserves, crafts, garden flowers, vegetables, photography, and a children’s section. The returning XO Kids program promises new activities alongside their established offerings, ensuring a fun experience for families.

Visitors can look forward to live music from local talent such as Steve Hamlin and Kayla Wilcox, as well as performances from the Gore Musical Theatre. Other attractions include a Grand Parade at 14:15, a dog race at 14:45 (pet owners are encouraged to bring their dogs), mountain bike stunts by Levi Goodall, woodchopping events, and a mullet competition at 14:00. The Pet Corner will offer pony rides for a gold coin donation to Riding for the Disabled.
