Auckland Professor Discusses Past Meetings with Jeffrey Epstein
A professor from the University of Auckland, Brian Boyd, has publicly addressed his past interactions with the disgraced financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Their meetings, which took place in 2012, have resurfaced in the latest release of emails from the US Justice Department as part of its ongoing investigation into Epstein’s activities.
Boyd, a noted expert on the works of Vladimir Nabokov, met Epstein twice in the United States after the financier attended a lecture by Boyd on Nabokov’s novel, Lolita. In an interview with ReadingRoom, Boyd revealed he was aware that his correspondence with Epstein could eventually come to light but maintained that he did not engage in any wrongdoing.
The professor recounted a significant email exchange in which Epstein suggested a fee for Boyd to write about Lolita. In September 2012, Boyd informed Epstein, “You suggested a while back we should work out the details of the money transfer,” and proposed an initial fee of $50,000. Epstein countered with an offer of $75,000, but ultimately, no agreement was finalized. Boyd stated, “It came to nothing. I never chased it up… I found out that he had been charged in Florida, and I certainly wasn’t interested in pursuing it.”
Boyd’s reflections on his breakfast meetings with Epstein reveal a complex dynamic. He described Epstein as “an interesting, lively guy,” but also acknowledged the troubling context surrounding their interactions. Boyd recalled a group of young women present during one of their meetings, which he described as “a bevy of beauties.” Reflecting on this now infamous phrase, Boyd clarified, “They were just his staff, arranging everything.”
When asked about his initial impressions of Epstein, Boyd admitted, “I wish I had [seen through him], but I wasn’t perceptive enough.” He acknowledged that Epstein possessed a “smooth” charisma that could easily mislead others.
The discussion then turned to the literary implications of their conversations. Boyd expressed his belief that Epstein’s interest in Lolita was both literary and sordid. “He generally did know his Nabokov pretty well but certainly had a sordid interest as well,” Boyd noted.
Boyd has long maintained that Lolita, published in 1957, is a morally complex work that continues to provoke strong reactions. He described it as “a very moral book,” emphasizing its exploration of deep ethical issues surrounding its controversial subject matter.
As the conversation shifted back to the recent revelations, Boyd reflected on how he felt about being associated with Epstein. “I’m very relieved that I never took up the money,” he stated, adding that it would have tainted any future writing on Lolita. He dismissed concerns about public perception, asserting, “People are idiots.” Boyd stated he believed Epstein would ultimately be remembered as “a particularly nasty creep,” while Nabokov’s legacy as a major writer would remain intact.
In a related note, Boyd mentioned the negative associations that have arisen from Epstein’s actions, but he believes that the true essence of Nabokov and his work will endure. He quoted the Board of the International Vladimir Nabokov Society, which responded to Epstein’s exploitation of the novel, stating, “This is exactly the sort of exploitation and complicity that Nabokov’s novel exposes.”
Despite the controversy, Boyd remains focused on his academic work. He is currently engaged in multiple projects, including a long-term biography of philosopher Karl Popper. Boyd expressed a desire for private patrons who are “morally squeaky clean” to support his literary endeavors.
The latest tranche of emails not only highlights Boyd’s connections with Epstein but also serves as a reminder of the far-reaching impacts of Epstein’s criminal behavior. As the investigation continues, the complexities of these associations will likely remain a topic of discussion within academic and literary circles.
