Authorities Warn Public to Avoid Phillips’ Crime Scene Areas

Authorities have issued a warning against trespassing on private property linked to Phillips, who lived in hiding for nearly four years. Investigators stress that entering the area without permission constitutes trespassing. Following recent developments, cordons on Te Anga Road have been lifted, yet officials urge both the media and the public to maintain a safe distance from the sites, as they continue to be active crime scenes where officers are gathering evidence.

Phillips died on March 25, 2024, after he reportedly shot and critically injured a police officer during a confrontation that followed a burglary in Piopio. The police indicated that Phillips opened fire after his quad bike was disabled by spike strips, striking the officer in the head and shoulder. The officer was critically injured and remains in Waikato Hospital while other officers fatally shot Phillips in response.

In a significant turn of events, one of Phillips’ children was detained at the scene of the shooting, while two others were located unharmed later that day in dense bush nearby. The children are now in the care of Oranga Tamariki, New Zealand’s Ministry for Children.

Since the incident, police have discovered multiple makeshift camps where the Phillips family had been living. Investigators have recovered an array of items, including quad bikes, trail bikes, tarpaulins, oil containers, tools, and even a toilet bowl. Photographs have emerged showing tents camouflaged with netting and vegetation, indicating a deliberate effort to remain hidden.

Detective Senior Sergeant Andrew Saunders stated that the evidence suggests Phillips did not operate alone and may have had assistance from others during his time in hiding. This revelation raises further questions about the extent of the network supporting Phillips and the circumstances surrounding his prolonged evasion of law enforcement.
