China Conducts Live-Fire Drills Around Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions

China’s Eastern Theatre Command has launched live-fire military exercises surrounding Taiwan, a move that escalates regional tensions. The drills will take place over a ten-hour period beginning at 08:00 local time (00:00 GMT), during which five designated zones around the island will be restricted for both air and sea traffic. This marks the sixth significant round of military exercises conducted by China since 2022, following the visit of former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the self-governing island.

The announcement of these drills comes on the heels of increased rhetoric from Beijing regarding its territorial claims, particularly after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi suggested that a hypothetical attack on Taiwan could provoke a military response from Japan. The timing is also notable as it follows the recent announcement of US$11.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, the largest package of its kind to date, prompting protests from China’s Ministry of Defence, which warned of “forceful measures” in response.

Shi Yi, a spokesperson for the Eastern Theatre Command, stated that the military exercises are intended to serve as a “serious warning” to what China refers to as “Taiwan Independence” separatist forces, as well as external interference. The Chinese military has deployed a range of assets, including fighter jets, bombers, unmanned aerial vehicles, and long-range rockets, to practice striking mobile land-based targets while simulating a coordinated assault from multiple directions.

Taiwan’s government reacted strongly to the drills. A spokesperson from the presidential office urged China to refrain from miscalculating the situation and to avoid actions that undermine regional peace. They called for an immediate halt to what they characterized as irresponsible provocations. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense reported that in the last 24 hours, two Chinese military aircraft and eleven ships operated near the island, prompting Taiwan’s military to maintain a high state of alert and readiness for rapid response exercises.

Taiwan’s defense ministry emphasized that its armed forces would remain vigilant, stating, “All members of our armed forces will remain highly vigilant and fully on guard, taking concrete action to defend the values of democracy and freedom.” The ministry also indicated that it is closely monitoring movements of Chinese military assets in the vicinity.

In a demonstration of increased Chinese military activity, dozens of vessels and aircraft were reported operating near Taiwan, with some allegedly encroaching on the island’s contiguous zone, defined as 24 nautical miles from its coast. In response, Taiwan’s coast guard has deployed large ships to address Chinese coast guard operations in nearby waters and is working to minimize the impact of the drills on maritime routes and fishing areas.

Despite the heightened military tensions, Taiwan’s stock market remained stable, rising by 0.6% to a record high in morning trading. Local residents expressed mixed sentiments about the drills; Lin Wei-ming, a teacher in Taipei, commented, “I think these drills are just meant to scare us. Similar drills have happened before… the political side of things can only be handled by Taiwan’s current government and how they choose to respond.”

In a striking display of military messaging, the Chinese military released posters with titles like “Shields of Justice: Smashing Illusions” and “Arrows of Justice: Control and Denial.” These graphics depict various military strategies and emphasize China’s stance against foreign interference. The drills are particularly focused on sealing off Taiwan’s vital ports, including Keelung to the north and Kaohsiung to the south, a move that has not gone unnoticed by international observers.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has previously articulated that Taiwan’s integration into China is a crucial aspect of Beijing’s vision for the global order. The current drills represent not only military posturing but also a calculated effort to assert China’s sovereignty claims amid rising regional tensions and international scrutiny.

As the situation continues to develop, Taiwan maintains that only its people can determine the island’s future, firmly rejecting China’s claims of sovereignty.
