Federal Agents Kill Minneapolis Man, Protests Erupt Nationwide

Federal agents fatally shot a Minneapolis man, identified as Alex Pretti, igniting widespread protests across the United States. The incident occurred during an immigration enforcement operation on January 7, 2023, and has led to escalating tensions between federal and local authorities.

The Department of Homeland Security described the shooting as a self-defense action by a Border Patrol agent, claiming Pretti approached with a handgun and resisted attempts to disarm him. However, video footage verified by Reuters contradicts this narrative. It shows Pretti, a 37-year-old intensive care nurse, holding a phone while attempting to assist fellow protesters who had been pushed to the ground by agents.

In the video, Pretti can be seen filming the chaotic scene when a federal agent aggressively pushes a woman away. He steps in to help, raising his arm in defense as the agent sprays him with pepper spray. Despite his efforts to aid the fallen woman, he is forcibly restrained by several agents. Moments later, an officer fires four shots at Pretti, followed by additional gunfire from another agent. Initially, agents back away from Pretti’s body, with some later appearing to provide medical assistance as bystanders are kept at a distance.

The shooting prompted hundreds to protest in Minneapolis, attracting attention in major cities like New York, Washington D.C., and San Francisco. Local officials expressed outrage over the incident, with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz highlighting the disturbing nature of the footage. “The federal government cannot be trusted to lead this investigation,” Walz stated, asserting that the state would take charge of the inquiry.

Conflict between state and federal authorities intensified following the shooting. Drew Evans, head of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, reported that federal agents obstructed his team’s investigation efforts. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara confirmed that Pretti was a lawful gun owner with no significant criminal record apart from minor traffic violations.

As protests continued, local and federal authorities clashed over the narrative surrounding the incident. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed Pretti had attacked agents during the immigration operation, emphasizing that he was not there to peacefully protest. In response, Walz and other officials called for an immediate cessation of the Trump administration’s local immigration enforcement actions. “How many more residents need to die for this operation to end?” asked Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey at a press conference.

The unrest prompted the closure of the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the postponement of a game featuring the Minnesota Timberwolves in the National Basketball Association. Local leaders urged the public to exercise restraint. “Please do not destroy our city,” O’Hara appealed.

Vice President JD Vance visited Minneapolis and accused local officials of inciting opposition to federal agents, while Walz countered that the immigration enforcement operations have strained local resources.
