Immigrant Woman Builds Bridges in Business and Community
When Nalini Dutt moved from India to New Zealand, she made a conscious choice to start anew, leaving behind her previous titles and expectations. Her journey reflects a powerful narrative of migration and resilience, emphasizing how individuals can redefine their paths while contributing to their new communities.
In her early days in New Zealand, Dutt entered meetings where her accomplishments were unknown. This experience taught her an essential lesson: “capability travels, reputation does not.” From that moment, she redirected her focus from past achievements to the consistent value she could deliver in her new role. Migration, she believes, is a reset button that removes labels and compels individuals to prove their worth once again.
Dutt’s background in the automotive sector in India, where women are underrepresented in leadership roles, shaped her belief that inclusion is crucial for business success. She asserts that diverse leadership teams make better decisions, ultimately strengthening industries. Currently, she leads the national home services vertical at AA Home, part of the AA organization, where she experiences a workplace culture that values diversity and merit-based discussions.
In addition to her corporate responsibilities, Dutt is actively involved in her community. She serves as Deputy Chair of Rape Prevention Education and contributes to Women in Automotive NZ. Dutt also mentors small business owners, helping them navigate growth and sustainability. She emphasizes that when small businesses thrive, entire families and communities benefit, leading to stronger economies.
Dutt acknowledges that her journey is not solely her own. Her understanding of leadership has been shaped by the influential women in her life, including her mother, sister, and friends who provided support and guidance. She also credits strong male figures, such as her father and husband, who have encouraged her ambitions and grounded her in her responsibilities.
Reflecting on her experiences, Dutt encourages other immigrant women who may feel caught between cultures to embrace their global perspectives. Often, individuals enter new environments feeling defensive, but she believes that adaptability, cultural intelligence, and resilience are valuable assets. Rebuilding confidence and proving oneself takes courage and consistency, yet it leads to significant personal growth.
As Dutt progresses in her career, she remains mindful of her responsibility to increase women’s workforce participation and access to education in India. She emphasizes that economic empowerment can transform generational outcomes, stating that commercial credibility and social impact are interconnected. “Credibility builds influence, and influence enables change,” she asserts.
Her journey illustrates the profound impact of migration, not just on individuals but on communities and industries as a whole. Through her work and advocacy, Nalini Dutt embodies the spirit of bridging cultures and building opportunities. She remains committed to widening the circle for those who follow her path, proving that one can be rooted in their heritage while taking on new responsibilities in a different land.
