Last Chance for Aucklanders to Vote in Local Elections

Aucklanders have just days remaining to cast their votes in the local elections, which close at midday on October 11, 2023. Residents are urged to submit their ballot papers quickly to ensure their voices are heard in shaping the future of their community.
This election cycle allows voters in east Auckland to select representatives for two Howick ward seats on the Auckland Council and for the 11 positions on the Howick Local Board. The local board will feature three elected members each for the subdivisions of Howick and Pakuranga, two for Botany, and three for the newly established subdivision of Flat Bush.
As the deadline approaches, Auckland Council emphasizes the urgency of participation. At precisely 12:00 PM on Saturday, all ballot boxes across the city will be closed, securing the votes of those who acted in time. The collected ballots will then be transported to the vote processing center, where the counting process will begin immediately.
According to Lou-Ann Ballantyne, general manager of governance and engagement at Auckland Council, “By Saturday afternoon, Aucklanders will have voted to decide who will lead our city for the next three years.” She expressed gratitude to all candidates and voters participating in the democratic process, stating, “This election is all about the future of Auckland. From transport and climate action to community services, the elected individuals will shape the region’s direction for years to come.”
Voting Process and Results Timeline
Progress results will be posted online at www.voteauckland.co.nz shortly after 15:00 on October 11. This will provide the first glimpse into which candidates are leading, based on votes submitted between September 9 and October 10. It is anticipated that the early count will reflect between 80 and 90 percent of all votes cast.
As the vote counting progresses, some races may remain very close, with only a few votes distinguishing the leading candidates. For those standing in multiple races, early leads could shift significantly once all ballots are counted. Preliminary results will be available starting October 13, which will include additional votes cast on the final voting day, pushing the total count to approximately 95-98 percent. However, since special votes will still need to be counted, the outcome may still be uncertain in tightly contested races.
Official results are scheduled to be announced on October 17, 2023. This final tally will include every verified vote, including those cast as special votes, confirming Auckland’s new mayor, ward councillors, and local board members. The newly elected representatives will officially take their positions on October 18.
For those eager for real-time updates, live results and coverage of the local elections will be available on www.times.co.nz on Saturday afternoon, providing an instant look at the electoral outcomes as they unfold.
