New Zealand Immigration Issues Warning Over Phone Scams
Immigration New Zealand has issued a warning regarding an increase in sophisticated phone scams, where scammers impersonate immigration officials using New Zealand mobile numbers to appear legitimate. The organization advises the public to remain vigilant as these scams target not only New Zealand citizens but also migrants living in the country and individuals overseas.
Scammers Create Urgency to Exploit Victims
According to Stephen Vaughan, Chief Operating Officer at Immigration New Zealand, these fraudulent calls are not authentic, and officials will never contact individuals via phone to request payments. “If someone calls saying they are from Immigration New Zealand demanding a payment – it is a scam,” Vaughan stated. “Hang up immediately.”
In a recent example of this scam, callers claimed there was an urgent issue with a visa, creating a sense of pressure or fear. This tactic is designed to manipulate individuals into providing personal information, such as passport or bank details. Vaughan emphasized that “these scammers want people to worry,” reiterating that Immigration New Zealand staff will never ask for such details or request payments over the phone.
Guidance for Victims and Reporting Mechanisms
Individuals who receive suspicious calls are encouraged to contact Immigration New Zealand directly to verify the legitimacy of the communication. Vaughan advised, “If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts. Do not give any personal details. Hang up and report it.”
The public is also urged to report any scams to CERT NZ using their online reporting form. More information on how to recognize and avoid scams is available on the Immigration New Zealand website, which serves as a resource for educating the public about these fraudulent activities.
The rise in such scams highlights the need for increased awareness and caution among the public. By staying informed and vigilant, individuals can better protect themselves from falling victim to these increasingly sophisticated fraudulent schemes.
