A new election for the Papatoetoe subdivision of the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board will take place on April 9, 2026, following the recent decision by the Manukau District Court to void the results of the October election. The Auckland Council has announced that nominations for candidates are now open, with a deadline set for midday, January 28, 2026.

Candidates interested in running for one of the four available seats can submit their nominations online. For those who prefer traditional methods, nomination forms are accessible at the Papatoetoe and Manukau libraries, the electoral office, or can be downloaded from the VoteAuckland website.

To be eligible for nomination, candidates must meet specific criteria. They need to be New Zealand citizens, at least 18 years old, and registered on the New Zealand electoral roll as of the close of nominations for the previous election on August 1, 2025. Additionally, each candidate’s nomination form must include the signatures of two voters from the Papatoetoe subdivision and a deposit of $200, which will be refunded if they receive more than 25 percent of the votes cast for the lowest successful candidate.

Key Dates for Candidates and Voters

The timeline for the election is crucial for both candidates and voters. Nominations will close at midday on January 28, 2026. All forms must be submitted either online or in hard copy to the Electoral Office located at Level 2, 198 Federal Street, Auckland. The list of candidates will be announced shortly after the nomination period closes on the VoteAuckland platform.

Voters can anticipate the following key dates:
March 9, 2026: Voting opens
April 9, 2026, midday: Voting closes
April 10, 2026: Election results announced

Background on the Voided Election

The need for a new election stems from a ruling by the Manukau District Court. On December 16, 2025, Judge RA McIlraith determined that the election for the Papatoetoe subdivision should be voided, necessitating a fresh electoral process. This decision underscores the importance of electoral integrity within local governance.

The Auckland Council encourages eligible candidates to participate in this democratic process, emphasizing the significance of local representation. As the election date approaches, candidate profiles will become available to voters, offering insights into their priorities and plans for the community.

This new election represents an opportunity for residents of Papatoetoe to ensure their voices are heard in the local governance of the Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board.
