Protests Erupt Near Winter Olympics Venue, Clash with Police
Protests erupted near a Winter Olympics venue in Milan on Sunday, leading to clashes between demonstrators and police. Initially peaceful, the protest escalated when a small group of demonstrators turned violent, prompting Italian police to deploy tear gas and a water cannon. Authorities reported that dozens of protesters attempted to access a highway near the Santagiulia Olympic Ice Hockey Rink, where the Winter Olympics are taking place.
Earlier in the day, a larger demonstration involved approximately 10,000 people, including families and students, who marched to voice their concerns about the environmental impact of Olympic construction projects. The main protest had already dispersed by the time the violent incidents occurred. According to a report by the Associated Press, masked protesters set off smoke bombs and firecrackers on a bridge near a construction site about 800 metres from the Olympic Village, which currently houses around 1,500 athletes.
Police managed access roads to the athletes’ village with vehicles and temporary fencing, ensuring that athletes could travel to events without disruption. Officials confirmed there was no indication that the protests affected their movements. The demonstration coincided with a visit by US Vice President JD Vance, who attended the Winter Olympics opening ceremony on Saturday. Following the ceremony, he visited Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper with his family, distancing himself from the protest site.
Protesters expressed their opposition to the presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, who were reportedly providing security for the US delegation. While US Homeland Security Investigations typically deploys officers to international events, the immigration enforcement division is not expected to operate in Italy. Concerns were raised by demonstrators about the environmental implications of Olympic infrastructure, particularly the construction of a new bobsled track in Cortina.
During the larger demonstration, participants carried cardboard cutouts representing trees that were cut down for Olympic construction, accompanied by music and performances. One banner from a group identifying itself as the Unsustainable Olympic Committee read, “Let’s take back the cities and free the mountains.” Another group, the Association of Proletariat Excursionists, coordinated a symbolic display of trees to highlight their environmental concerns.
Protester Guido Maffioli criticized the bypassing of laws usually required for significant infrastructure projects, citing urgency related to the Games. He warned that the private entity organizing the Olympics might ultimately transfer financial burdens to Italian taxpayers. Some demonstrators displayed signs reading “Get out of the Games: Genocide States, Fascist Police and Polluting Sponsors,” and one protester wore an artificial tree labelled “Infernal Olympics.”
The protest followed a similar demonstration the previous week, which also contested the deployment of ICE agents linked to the US delegation’s security. Organizers reiterated their opposition to ICE personnel, despite official assurances that only a limited number of officers would remain within US diplomatic areas and would not conduct operations on Italian streets.
As the situation unfolded, the response from law enforcement highlighted the ongoing tensions surrounding the Winter Olympics and the various social issues being raised by activists.
