Teen Overcomes Trauma After Sexual Assaults, Seeks Justice
A young woman from Auckland has embarked on a journey of recovery and empowerment following multiple sexual assaults that left her grappling with trauma and navigating the complexities of the justice system. Now aged 19, she has found strength in her experiences and is determined to move forward with her life.
In a courtroom setting that should have been devoid of such heavy emotional burdens, the teen faced her attackers, recounting harrowing details of her experiences. The incidents began in early 2022 when she was assaulted by **Charlie Ngapera**, who was then 42 years old. Ngapera lured the then 15-year-old to a remote location, where he sexually violated her while she attempted to escape.
Later that same year, she endured a traumatic night when a group of young men, including **Teina Takimoana** and **Arthur Te Wera**, also assaulted her. They confined her to a room, taking turns to violate her while she repeatedly pleaded for them to stop. This second incident was particularly distressing, as it left her feeling helpless and afraid.
Despite the psychological toll, the teen bravely testified against her assailants. **Te Wera** was convicted and sentenced in March 2024 to **seven years and nine months** in prison, while **Takimoana**, who unsuccessfully defended himself at trial, received a **six-year sentence** in November 2024. **Ngapera** was sentenced to **two years and nine months** in September 2022.
While the justice system’s outcomes have left her feeling disappointed, she remains resolute in her decision to pursue legal action. “I feel like it’s one of those things that if you don’t say anything, you will regret it later down the track,” she stated. “You need to tell your story.”
Finding Strength in Healing
As the legal processes concluded, she began focusing on healing and rebuilding her life. Now living overseas, she reflects on her journey with a sense of pride and optimism. “I think I’m doing really well,” she said, indicating a shift from victimhood to empowerment.
Although she acknowledges that the pain of her past remains, she actively works to manage her emotional health. She has taken up a job in an industry she has long dreamed of entering and is pursuing further qualifications. “I’m also doing a lot of reading and a lot of research. I love researching my health,” she explained.
Family support has been essential, and she is in the process of seeking assistance from the **Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)** for ongoing support. While she still experiences nightmares and occasional feelings of fear, she is committed to not allowing her past to dictate her future. “If I let those things stress me out, then I’m just doing more harm to myself,” she emphasized.
Confronting the Past
The memories of her court appearances still haunt her. “Having to go to trial was really hard. It felt like everything just came straight back,” she recalled. The emotional toll of revisiting the trauma through police videos and courtroom testimonies was profound.
She expressed anger towards her attackers, particularly at Ngapera, who continues to deny any wrongdoing. “I had this feeling, like, what if no one believes me?” she reflected on the fears that plagued her during the trials. Despite the challenges, she is resolute in her belief that she has emerged stronger.
The assaults have left an indelible mark on her life, but she refuses to be defined by them. “I’m looking at it like, I’m over here, doing what I love, and they’re in jail. They might not be in there for long, but I’ve come so far in life, and they just won’t.”
As she continues her healing journey, this young woman serves as a powerful reminder of resilience and the importance of speaking out against sexual violence. Her story encourages others who have faced similar traumas to seek help and share their experiences.
