Youth MP Maevi Gains Insights from Parliamentary Experience
The appointment of Maevi, a student from Roncalli College, as the Youth Member of Parliament for Rangitata has provided her with invaluable experiences and connections within New Zealand’s political landscape. Her three-month tenure, which concluded at the end of August 2023, included a three-day visit to Parliament in Wellington and an exclusive dinner with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon. Maevi was one of only two Youth MPs invited to share a table with prominent leaders, including Children’s Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad and the European Union ambassador, Lawrence Meredith.
During her time at Parliament, Maevi expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to learn from seasoned leaders. “It was a profound honour to learn from such esteemed leaders, hear their leadership journeys, and gain insights that continue to inspire the way I serve and lead in my community,” she stated. Her experience reinforced her belief in the importance of youth participation in government, particularly as she listened to over 80 general debate speeches covering pressing topics such as child poverty, mental health, and the rising cost of living.
Raised by a single mother, Maevi’s personal background has fueled her passion for advocating equitable systems within New Zealand. She noted that her experiences during Youth Parliament have motivated her to create change. “Hearing from youth has inspired me to ensure their voices are heard,” she said. To prepare for her role, Maevi engaged with young people in her electorate, hosting several meetings to gather their feedback and concerns. She also distributed a survey to collect data, which was presented to Hon. Tama Potaka, Minister for Māori Development, during her time in Wellington.
Parliamentary Highlights and Personal Growth
Maevi’s inaugural day at Parliament was marked by significant events, including her selection to deliver the opening speech at the powhiri. She highlighted her excitement for the upcoming events and shared her own journey in politics. The following day, she delivered a general debate speech titled “Young people pay the price,” which emphasized how cycles of poverty disproportionately affect those born into hardship.
The knowledge Maevi gained as a Youth MP has spurred her to take practical actions that benefit her community. As president of the Roncalli College Z Club, she led initiatives such as a Pink Breakfast, raising over $1,500 for the Breast Cancer Foundation. She also organized efforts to collect men’s products for Presbyterian Support South Canterbury, aiming for a goal of 500 items. In her capacity as a co-founder of Eco Youth SC, Maevi has facilitated camps focused on environmental education and hosted debates featuring guest speakers on various topics.
“I feel incredibly privileged to have represented both Roncalli College and the Rangitata electorate in this experience,” Maevi remarked. Her time in Youth Parliament has reinforced her commitment to amplifying youth voices and leveraging leadership to foster meaningful change within her school and the broader community.
Looking ahead, Maevi plans to pursue a double degree in law and politics, philosophy, and economics at Canterbury University next year. The insights she gained from her parliamentary experience will undoubtedly guide her as she continues her efforts to improve society. She also had the opportunity to meet various parliamentary leaders, including Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, Chloe Swarbrick, Greg O’Connor, Chris Hipkins, Catherine Wedd, and Barbara Kuriger.
Maevi’s journey as a Youth MP is a testament to the potential of young leaders to influence change. Her enthusiasm and determination reflect a growing movement among youth to engage in political discourse and advocate for their communities.
