All Whites Face Setback as Cacace and Paulsen Withdraw from Matches
The All Whites have encountered a significant setback ahead of their upcoming matches against Australia, with two players withdrawing from the squad. Defender Liberato Cacace, who plays for Wrexham AFC, is sidelined due to a hamstring injury as he manages his recovery. Cacace will miss the match on September 8 in Canberra and the second leg on September 9 in Auckland. Additionally, goalkeeper Alex Paulsen will not participate, as he remains with his new club Lechia Gdańsk to acclimatize following a recent loan move from AFC Bournemouth.
In response to these withdrawals, coach Darren Bazeley has called up two young players to fill the gaps. Luke Brooke-Smith, a 17-year-old attacker from Wellington Phoenix, and Henry Gray, a 20-year-old goalkeeper from Ipswich Town, have been selected to join the squad. Bazeley views this as a valuable opportunity for both players, particularly with the FIFA U-20 World Cup commencing later this month in Chile.
Young Talent Seizes Opportunity
Bazeley expressed confidence in the abilities of Brooke-Smith and Gray, stating, “Henry and Luke are players we very much see as future All Whites. When it came to naming replacements for Libby and Alex, we saw it as a great opportunity for them both, especially with them being part of the FIFA U-20 World Cup.”
He praised their performances at the club level, emphasizing that despite their youth, they are ready to contribute on the international stage. “Both have earned this opportunity with really strong performances with their clubs, and while both are young, I have no reservations about them having something to offer at this level,” Bazeley added.
Gray has previously been part of the squad, while this will mark Brooke-Smith’s debut with the All Whites. Bazeley looks forward to welcoming him and giving him a chance to showcase his talents.
Format and Stakes of the Soccer Ashes
The upcoming matches form part of the Soccer Ashes series, with the winner determined by the aggregate score across both games. If the teams are tied after 90 minutes in the second leg, the match will go directly to penalties.
As excitement builds for these fixtures, the All Whites will aim to overcome the challenges posed by the absence of key players and demonstrate their depth with the inclusion of emerging talents. Fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching how the new additions adapt to the international competition.
