Wellington Phoenix Struggle with Defensive Errors in 3-2 Defeat
Wellington Phoenix faced a disappointing 3-2 loss against Melbourne Victory, with coach Giancarlo Italiano highlighting critical defensive lapses as the root cause of the defeat. The match, held at Sky Stadium, saw the Phoenix remain in 10th place in the standings, sitting four points adrift of the top six with only ten matches left in the season.
Italiano expressed frustration over the “inexcusable” errors made by his team, which allowed the visitors to capitalize on opportunities in front of a passionate home crowd. Despite acknowledging some positive aspects of his team’s performance, he stressed the need for better defensive discipline.
“There were some really inexcusable moments that I’m really annoyed at that were easily preventable,” Italiano stated. “We made some silly errors tonight… the second and third goals are terrible to concede.” He further emphasized, “I don’t mind if we concede goals where we’re open and expansive, but not when it’s down to simple box defending principles we work on all the time.”
The match unfolded with Melbourne Victory taking an early lead in the 10th minute, as centre-back Sebastian Esposito flicked in a corner kick at the near post. The Phoenix equalized in the 39th minute through Carlo Armiento, only for Victory to reclaim the advantage just before halftime with a goal from Nishan Velupillay, who capitalized on a fortunate deflection.
With 13 minutes remaining, Victory extended their lead to 3-1 after a successful combination between substitutes Keegan Jelacic and Louis D’Arrigo. The Phoenix managed to pull one back just three minutes later when a right-wing corner was inadvertently turned into their own net by the Victory defense, offering a glimmer of hope for the home side.
In a controversial moment, Wellington’s chances of equalizing were dashed when a late penalty was overturned after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR). Initially, referee Jack Morgan ruled that Armiento had been fouled in the box, but after consulting the replays, he reversed his decision, much to the chagrin of Italiano.
Looking ahead, the Wellington Phoenix will travel to Sydney to face the Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday, where they may welcome back newly re-signed All Whites midfielder Sarpreet Singh. The team will need to address their defensive issues if they hope to improve their standing as the season progresses.
