Ashburton Launches Nordic Pole Walking at Parkrun Event
Nordic pole walking is set to enhance community fitness in Ashburton, New Zealand, with a new initiative launching this Saturday at the local Parkrun event. The exercise, which combines walking with the use of poles, is gaining global popularity for its health benefits. Bev Skates, a resident of Ashburton, has spearheaded this effort, aiming to encourage others to join her in this invigorating outdoor activity.
Skates, who had never tried Nordic pole walking before deciding to introduce it to her community, expressed her enthusiasm for the initiative. She collaborated with event organisers of the Ashburton Domain Parkrun, which attracts around 80 participants each Saturday morning. The addition of Nordic pole walking to the existing 5-kilometre Parkrun route aims to create a welcoming environment for all, particularly the elderly.
“It’s just something I thought of that would be good for Ashburton, because the domain is a safe place for people, particularly the elderly, so they can be confident in walking,” Skates stated. She highlighted that the activity allows participants to enjoy the outdoors while fostering social connections.
The health benefits of Nordic pole walking are significant. Skates noted that this form of exercise provides a full-body workout, enhancing posture and upper body strength while engaging approximately 95 percent of the body’s muscles.
Brendon Adam, the event director, endorsed the initiative, describing it as “an excellent addition” to the weekly Parkrun. While the Parkrun route is 5 kilometres long, participants can choose to walk just one lap if they prefer. “We welcome people who can only do as much as they can. It’s a real community feel down at the event,” he explained, emphasizing the inclusive nature of the gathering.
The first Nordic pole walking session will take place at the Ashburton Domain Parkrun on Saturday at 8 a.m. Interested individuals can register for the event at parkrun.co.nz/ashburtondomain. This initiative not only promotes physical fitness but also cultivates a sense of community among participants, making it a promising addition to Ashburton’s active lifestyle offerings.
