Australia Clinches Constellation Cup After Thrilling Decider
The Australian Diamonds reclaimed the Constellation Cup after a dramatic series decider against the Silver Ferns in Christchurch, winning by a narrow margin of one goal. The final test concluded with a score of 62-57 in favor of the Silver Ferns, forcing an additional decider period that showcased intense competition from both teams.
In a critical fourth quarter, the Silver Ferns mounted a remarkable comeback from a three-goal deficit. Vice captain Kelly Jackson made significant contributions, tipping two goal attempts and forcing a held ball. The reintroduction of Georgia Heffernan at goal attack revitalized the New Zealand shooting end, facilitating a flow of accurate feeds to shooter Grace Nweke. The Silver Ferns’ tactical adjustments helped them dominate the quarter, outscoring the Diamonds 19-11.
Australia’s coach Stacey Marinkovich implemented several changes throughout the match, but the Silver Ferns maintained their momentum. Nweke proved to be a cornerstone for the Ferns, scoring an impressive 56 goals at a remarkable 95 percent accuracy rate. Following a brief halftime break, the teams returned to the court for the decider period, starting the scoreboard anew.
New Zealand seized an early advantage, taking a 3-0 lead. However, a turnover by Sunday Aryang sparked Australia into action, and the teams quickly found themselves tied. As the clock wound down, both Maddy Gordon and Kate Heffernan struggled with cramping, briefly sidelining themselves during the additional time.
At the halfway mark of the series decider, Australia held a slim lead of 7-5. As the final moments approached, Mila Reuelu-Buchanan made a pivotal tip on the transverse line, allowing Nweke to equalize the score at 11-all with just over a minute remaining. The Diamonds skillfully managed the clock, ultimately clinching the series decider with a final score of 12-11.
Despite the loss, the Silver Ferns demonstrated resilience throughout the series, especially after a challenging start. After the Diamonds secured victories in the first two matches by margins of 17 goals, the pressure on the New Zealand team increased. The reinstatement of coach Dame Noeline Taurua earlier in the weekend brought renewed hope, culminating in a strong performance with a nine-goal victory in the third Test.
In the decisive match, interim coach Yvette McCausland-Durie made effective changes, including shifting Gordon to wing attack and Heffernan to centre. The enhanced defensive intensity from the Silver Ferns, especially from newcomer Catherine Hall, who debuted last month, played a significant role in their competitive edge. Hall’s contributions at goal defense have been noteworthy, signaling a promising future for her in the sport.
The Silver Ferns leave this series with valuable experience and will soon head to the UK for upcoming tests against Scotland and England. They are expected to build on the momentum gained from this tightly contested series, marking a critical moment in their journey.
