Canterbury Overwhelms Southland 54-14 to Claim Ranfurly Shield

The Ranfurly Shield has changed hands once more, with Canterbury defeating Southland 54-14 at Rugby Park on March 10, 2024. This match marked Southland’s first defense of the Shield after they had recently secured it from Waikato with a 25-10 victory.

Canterbury’s dominance was evident from the outset. They established an early lead with a try from Corey Kellow, followed by a well-executed move that saw Dallas McLeod score after a clever grubber kick from Ngane Punivai. The visitors continued to press their advantage, with Dom Gardiner scoring another try off a lineout, making it clear that they intended to reclaim the prestigious trophy.

By halftime, Canterbury had built a commanding lead of 28-0. Despite Southland’s attempts to respond, they struggled to find a breakthrough against a resolute Canterbury defense. The Stags had moments of promise, but the visitors remained relentless in their pursuit of points.

In the second half, Southland finally found their stride. Jack Taylor, a hooker for the Highlanders, capitalized on a gap to score under the posts, narrowing the score to 28-7 after Byron Smith successfully converted the try. Unfortunately for Southland, their momentum was short-lived. A charged-down kick led to a quick Canterbury try, with Gardiner regaining possession and setting up Louie Chapman to extend the lead to 35-7.

Canterbury continued to dominate, pushing their lead further with additional tries from Jamie Hannah and All Black hooker George Bell. Southland managed to score again through a remarkable effort from Faletoi Peni, who set up Sam Fischli to close the gap to 47-14. Yet, it was Canterbury’s McLeod who capped the match with another intercept try, sealing a decisive victory.

Reflecting on the match, Southland captain Sean Withy expressed disappointment in his team’s performance. “Canterbury were awesome, and we just ran out of answers,” he told Sky Sport. “It’s a little bit embarrassing and disappointing right now, but the week we’ve had and how much it means to our province is truly special.”

With this victory, Canterbury not only reclaimed the Ranfurly Shield but also set a new record for the most Shield wins, marking their 17th title. They will now prepare to defend the Shield against Tasman at home next weekend, adding to the excitement surrounding the competition.
