England Faces Changes as Archer Injured and Pope Dropped for Boxing Day Test
England’s cricket team is set to undergo significant changes for the upcoming Boxing Day Test against Australia in Melbourne, following the injury of star bowler Jofra Archer and the dropping of batsman Ollie Pope. The England side, currently trailing 3-0 in the five-match Ashes series, aims to salvage some pride in the final two Tests.
Archer, who has been a standout performer on this tour, will be replaced by Gus Atkinson from Surrey. Archer has taken nine wickets throughout the series, including a five-wicket haul in Adelaide, while also contributing valuable runs, highlighted by his maiden fifty in the same match. His injury raises concerns regarding his availability for the upcoming Twenty20 World Cup scheduled for February and March 2024.
Captain Ben Stokes praised Archer’s efforts, stating, “The effort that he’s put in over these three games has been exceptional.” Stokes acknowledged the scrutiny surrounding Archer’s performance prior to the tour but emphasized his importance to the team.
In a strategic shift, Jacob Bethell has been brought into the squad and will bat at number three. Pope’s absence follows a disappointing run of form, with only a highest score of 46 in six Ashes innings. In contrast, opener Ben Duckett, despite his low tally of 97 runs across six innings, retains his place in the lineup.
Off-Field Concerns
The England team’s struggles extend beyond performance on the pitch. Rob Key, the team’s director, confirmed they are investigating reports of excessive drinking among players during a break between the second and third Tests in Noosa. Stokes expressed deep concern for the mental well-being of his players amid increasing media scrutiny of their conduct and performance throughout the tour.
The Australian squad is also facing changes, as spinner Nathan Lyon has been ruled out due to injury. Todd Murphy has been called up to replace him for the Melbourne Test. Additionally, captain Pat Cummins will miss the remainder of the series while managing a back issue, adding further complexity to the Australian camp.
The fourth Test of the Ashes series will commence at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on December 26, 2023. The England XI for this match includes: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (captain), Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Will Jacks, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, and Josh Tongue. Australia has named a strong squad featuring Steve Smith (captain), Scott Boland, Alex Carey, and Mitchell Starc among others.
As the series continues, both teams will be keen to address their on-field challenges while navigating the pressures that come with competing at the highest level. The upcoming matches will serve as a critical juncture for England as they seek to restore pride in a difficult tour.
