Fishing Enthusiasts Prepare for Annual Auckland Competition
Fishing enthusiasts are gearing up for the annual fishing competition hosted by the Orere Community and Boating Club (OCBC) on January 25, 2024. The event, part of the Auckland Anniversary Weekend celebrations, begins at 06:00 at Orere Point Beach Reserve and promises a day of friendly competition and community spirit.
Participants can look forward to weigh-ins scheduled for 14:00, where prizes will be awarded for the heaviest and average snapper, as well as the heaviest kingfish, trevally, John Dory, gurnard, and kahawai. The competition has become increasingly popular over the years, attracting an average of 60 to 80 entrants each time.
In addition to the fishing contest, attendees will have the chance to win exciting prizes through raffles. Major sponsors such as Burnsco Manukau and Bunnings Takanini have generously contributed items including a barbeque and a Brass Monkey chiller freezer. The event will also feature food and beverages, alongside a dedicated kids’ tent to ensure a family-friendly atmosphere.
The fishing competition is more than just a day of fun; it serves as a significant fundraiser for the local community. In the past, the OCBC has raised between $1,000 and $1,300 during the event, which is part of a series of fundraising activities held throughout the year, including events during Labour Weekend and Easter.
According to club event organiser Jas Fisher, the funds generated are vital in supporting local organizations. The OCBC distributes approximately $12,000 each year to various community initiatives, including support for Orere School, the Orere Point Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust, and Coastguard. Fisher emphasizes the club’s commitment to its community, stating, “We just love to support our little community.”
Following the weigh-in on Sunday, all fish caught will be auctioned off, with proceeds directed towards essential repairs for the club’s members-only ramp. This initiative underscores the OCBC’s dedication to enhancing local facilities and ensuring ongoing support for community services.
Tickets for the fishing contest are available for purchase online starting from January 23 or can be bought on the day of the event at Orere Point Beach Reserve from 06:00. Prices are set at $15 for club members and $20 for non-members, making it an accessible event for all fishing fans.
The OCBC’s annual fishing competition promises not only to be a thrilling day for participants but also a vital contributor to the local community’s wellbeing. Interested individuals are encouraged to join in for a day of competition, camaraderie, and community support.
