Kiwi Ferns Stage Dramatic Comeback Against Fetu Samoa
The Kiwi Ferns executed a stunning comeback to defeat Fetu Samoa 24-20 in a thrilling match held at Mount Smart Stadium on October 7, 2023. After trailing 20-0 at halftime, the Ferns displayed remarkable resilience, scoring four unanswered tries in the second half to secure their victory.
Fetu Samoa started the match with an aggressive approach, dominating the first half and building a significant lead. A memorable moment came from a crucial tackle by Apii Nicolls, which effectively halted a potentially game-changing try. Patricia Maliepo also demonstrated her skill with a successful corner conversion, contributing to Samoa’s commanding first-half performance.
As the second half commenced, the Kiwi Ferns needed to regroup. Coach Ricky Henry emphasized the importance of maintaining composure. “We weren’t playing our best football, but we had to go and earn it back,” he said. The Ferns rallied quickly, scoring three tries in just over five minutes.
The pivotal moment arrived when Mele Hufanga intercepted a Fetu kick, sprinting 90 meters to score the match-winning try. Ferns captain Georgia Hale expressed confidence in Hufanga’s abilities. “She’s lethal. We just needed to find her some space, and that was a great finish,” Hale remarked.
Henry praised Fetu Samoa’s strong start, acknowledging their physical style of play. “They bashed our front door down,” he noted, recognizing the challenge posed by the Samoan side. Despite the crowd largely supporting Samoa, Hale found the atmosphere invigorating, stating, “It’s so nice to see the international game blossom.”
The Kiwi Ferns struggled in the first half, unable to find their rhythm and missing numerous first-up tackles. Henry described their performance as “a bit scratchy and disconnected,” highlighting the need for patience and teamwork to turn the tide.
As the match progressed, the Kiwi Ferns showcased their experience, bolstered by four NRLW captains in the lineup. “We showed some class to get ourselves back in the game,” Henry said, reflecting on the team’s ability to adapt under pressure.
Both teams will return to action in a fortnight, with the Kiwi Ferns set to face the Jillaroos and Fetu Samoa preparing for their next challenge. This match not only displayed the competitive spirit of international rugby league but also highlighted the growing support for the sport across the globe.
