Lulu Sun Exits Australian Open After First-Round Defeat
Lulu Sun faced an early exit from the 2024 Australian Open, losing in the first round to Clara Fruhvirtova in a match marked by fluctuating momentum. This was Sun’s first match of the year as she continues her recovery from a wrist injury sustained last season.
The match began with promising signs for the 24-year-old New Zealander, who took a commanding lead of 3-1 in the first set after breaking Fruhvirtova’s serve in the opening game. Despite her efforts, Sun could not maintain her advantage, allowing Fruhvirtova to rally back.
Fruhvirtova, ranked 132 in the world, showed resilience as the match progressed. In the second set, Sun again established a 3-1 lead, but the Czech player fought back after trailing 3-5. Fruhvirtova managed to hold off several match points against her, ultimately breaking Sun’s serve to equalize at 5-5.
In a crucial moment, Fruhvirtova seized the opportunity to break Sun’s serve once more, taking the lead at 6-5. She then held her own serve to secure the match, concluding the contest with a score of 7-5, 7-5. This victory reflects Fruhvirtova’s determination after advancing through the qualifying rounds with three consecutive wins.
Looking ahead, Erin Routliffe and her new doubles partner Asia Muhammad are set to compete in their first match together on Wednesday afternoon. The duo aims to build on Routliffe’s recent success in the doubles circuit, and their performance will be closely watched by fans.
This first-round result underscores the challenges faced by players returning from injury, as Sun will seek to regain her form in the upcoming tournaments.
