Max Verstappen Critiques Red Bull’s Demotion of Liam Lawson
Four-time Formula One champion Max Verstappen has voiced his disagreement with Red Bull Racing’s decision to demote Liam Lawson after just two races in the current season. Lawson, a New Zealand driver, began the year as Verstappen’s teammate but has since been replaced by Yuki Tsunoda. Despite the setback, Lawson has secured a seat with the sister team, Racing Bulls, for the following season after a tumultuous start.
Lawson faced significant challenges early in the season. He crashed out during the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne after being left on slick tyres in rainy conditions. This unfortunate incident was compounded by a disappointing performance in Shanghai, where he finished outside the points after qualifying last for both the sprint and the main race.
In light of these events, Red Bull opted to promote Isaak Hadjar from Racing Bulls for the upcoming year, while Tsunoda has been named as the reserve driver for the Red Bull team in 2026. Verstappen’s critique of the decision highlights his belief in Lawson’s potential, suggesting that the demotion was premature given the circumstances.
Verstappen’s support for Lawson underscores the competitive nature of Formula One, where team dynamics and performance can shift rapidly. The young driver’s early season struggles may have contributed to the management’s decision, but Verstappen’s perspective raises questions about the decision-making processes within the team.
As the season progresses, both Lawson and Hadjar will have opportunities to showcase their skills, with Lawson aiming to make a significant impact at Racing Bulls. The developments within Red Bull Racing illustrate the high stakes and intense scrutiny that drivers face in the elite motorsport arena.
