New Zealand Falls Short in Opening T20 Against India in Nagpur

In the first match of a five-game T20 series, New Zealand struggled to chase a formidable target set by India, ultimately falling short by 48 runs in Nagpur. India posted an imposing total of 238 runs, while the visitors managed to score 190-7 in their innings.

India’s innings was highlighted by an explosive performance from Abhishek Sharma, who scored 84 runs off just 35 balls, including eight sixes. Despite losing two early wickets, including that of opener Sanju Samson for 10 and Ishan Kishan for 8, Abhishek’s aggressive batting steadied the innings. He formed a crucial partnership with captain Suryakumar Yadav, putting together 99 runs for the third wicket. Yadav contributed 32 runs from 22 balls, but fell to New Zealand’s skipper Mitchell Santner.

As the innings progressed, India experienced a slight dip in run-scoring. However, Rinku Singh provided a late surge with an unbeaten 44 runs off 20 balls, ensuring India finished strong at 238-7.

New Zealand’s response was marked by a promising partnership between Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman. Phillips scored 78 runs from 40 deliveries, and his stand with Chapman, who made 39 runs, offered a glimpse of hope. Unfortunately, Phillips’ dismissal in the 14th over significantly impacted New Zealand’s momentum.

The visitors struggled to maintain the required run rate, ultimately finishing their innings at 190-7. Daryl Mitchell added 28 runs from 18 balls, while Santner contributed 20 runs off 13 deliveries. Despite a spirited effort, the task became insurmountable, especially with India’s bowler Varun Chakravarthy taking two key wickets, including that of Chapman.

New Zealand’s bowling attack saw Jacob Duffy finish with figures of 2-27, while debutant Kristian Clarke took one wicket for 40 runs. Clarke, however, could not contribute with the bat, falling for a golden duck in the final over.

The second match of the series is scheduled for October 7, 2023, in Raipur, where New Zealand will look to bounce back against the formidable Indian side.
