Peter Burling Eyes Recovery After SailGP Perth Crash
Peter Burling remains optimistic that SailGP can learn valuable lessons from the recent incident that sidelined his team during the inaugural event of the new season in Perth. The New Zealand team, sailing their F50 foiling catamaran known as the Black Foils, faced an unfortunate crash on the second leg of the first race on February 24, 2024. The collision occurred when the Black Foils made contact with the Swiss team, resulting in significant damage to their vessel.
The back of the Black Foils’ F50 was severely damaged in the collision, leaving them unable to compete for the remainder of the regatta. Following a review of the incident, officials ruled that the New Zealand team was at fault, as the Swiss team had the right of way after turning towards them. This decision has sparked ongoing discussions among the Kiwi crew, who maintain their disagreement with the ruling.
Burling expressed his frustration regarding the incident, stating, “I’ve definitely seen it a few more times. It seems to pop up everywhere.” The captain’s hope for change stems from a desire to enhance the competitive nature of the sport and avoid similar incidents in the future.
Looking Ahead to Auckland
With the upcoming SailGP event scheduled to take place in Auckland on March 16-17, 2024, Burling and his team are focused on preparing their F50 for the home regatta. The New Zealand team aims to bounce back from the Perth crash, looking to harness local support as they compete on familiar waters.
The Auckland event represents a significant opportunity for the Black Foils to regain their competitive edge and showcase their skills in front of a home crowd. As they prepare for this crucial regatta, Burling hopes that the lessons learned from Perth will contribute to a safer and more competitive environment for all teams involved in SailGP.
The SailGP series continues to draw attention globally, with teams from various countries, including Switzerland, competing at the highest level of sailing. As the excitement builds for the Auckland regatta, Burling’s determination to turn the page on the Perth incident exemplifies the resilience and competitive spirit that defines this thrilling sport.
