Phillips Powers Volts to 41-Run Victory Over Stags
The Otago Volts secured a convincing 41-run victory against the Central Stags in the Super Smash match held in Alexandra on October 7, 2023. Led by a spectacular performance from Glenn Phillips, who scored an unbeaten 90 runs off just 48 balls, the Volts set a formidable target of 193 runs. The Stags managed to reach only 152 for eight in their 20 overs, falling short despite a promising start.
After winning the toss, Volts captain Luke Georgeson opted to bat first. Openers Llew Johnson and Jamal Todd provided a solid foundation, with Johnson contributing 13 runs off nine balls, including a six, while Todd added an entertaining 32 runs off 16 deliveries. Max Chu chipped in with 26 runs off 17 balls, leaving the Volts at a comfortable 80 for three.
As the innings progressed, Phillips demonstrated his versatility by switching from a right-handed to a left-handed grip. He began his innings cautiously, but his approach changed dramatically in the latter stages. Phillips reached his half-century off 32 balls and then entered an explosive phase. In the 17th over, he struck Toby Findlay for four boundaries in succession, showcasing his powerful hitting.
In the final overs, Phillips delivered a jaw-dropping performance, hitting former teammate Dean Foxcroft for a six followed by a boundary, showing off his left-handed prowess. He capped off his innings with a stunning shot against offspinner Jayden Lennox, sending the ball soaring over cover.
“It was great to finish it off nicely,” Phillips told TVNZ, reflecting on the team’s performance. “A couple of partnerships set us up well.”
The Stags began their chase with optimism, particularly through opener Will Young, who scored 40 runs off 19 balls, including three sixes and five fours. At one point, the Stags were well on track at 87 for two after ten overs. However, the momentum shifted when both Foxcroft and Dane Cleaver fell for 24 runs each, both dismissed by Georgeson, who produced an outstanding bowling performance.
Georgeson’s final figures of four wickets for 23 runs from four overs were pivotal in dismantling the Stags’ batting order. Danru Ferns supported with two wickets for 24 runs, as the Stags batted through their overs but could only salvage pride in their defeat.
With Phillips set to depart for India with the Black Caps, he expressed confidence in the Volts’ prospects for the remainder of the T20 campaign. “The guys are learning really fast. There’s a great crew here with a lot of power and effort with the ball, and everyone gives everything in the field. I think they’ve got everything they need to move forward,” he stated.
This victory positions the Volts strongly as they progress through the Super Smash tournament, showcasing their depth and talent, particularly highlighted by Phillips’ dynamic performance.
