Black Caps Struggle as India Claims Dominant T20 Series Lead

The New Zealand cricket team faced a significant setback as they succumbed to a comprehensive defeat by India in the third T20 International held at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on March 15, 2024. Chasing a target of 154 runs, India achieved victory with a remarkable score of 155-2 in just 10 overs, leading the series 3-0 with two matches still to play.

New Zealand’s innings ended at 153-9 after their full 20 overs, with Glenn Phillips as the standout performer, scoring 48 runs off 40 balls. The team struggled against India’s potent bowling attack, which featured Jasprit Bumrah, who took 3 wickets for 17 runs in four overs, and Ravi Bishnoi, who claimed 2 wickets for 18 runs.

Despite an early breakthrough when Matt Henry bowled out Sanju Samson on the first ball of the innings, India’s Abishek Sharma showcased his explosive batting by scoring 68 not out off just 20 balls, including a stunning half-century off only 14 balls. His performance marked the second-fastest half-century by an Indian batsman, leaving New Zealand’s bowlers struggling to defend their modest total.

The early loss of key players compounded New Zealand’s woes. Openers Devon Conway and Tim Seifert, along with Rachin Ravindra, were dismissed within the first six overs, crippling the team’s momentum. Conway’s struggles continued, having scored 0, 19, and 1 in the series, while Seifert fell victim to a delivery from Bumrah that clean-bowled him. Ravindra managed only 4 runs, following a promising performance in the previous match.

New Zealand’s batting lineup remains a pressing concern. Daryl Mitchell, currently ranked as the world’s No. 1 ODI batsman, found himself batting at No. 6, far from the top order where he could face more deliveries. The team may need to reconsider its batting order, especially with the potential return of Finn Allen, who is expected to join the squad after his recent success in the Big Bash League.

Phillips, alongside Mark Chapman and Mitchell, attempted to stabilize the innings, but Bishnoi claimed two crucial wickets to maintain the pressure on New Zealand. Hardik Pandya’s slower delivery ultimately deceived Mitchell, further damaging the Black Caps’ chances.

Captain Mitchell Santner acknowledged the challenges faced by his team, stating, “You’ve got to give credit to the way they bowled and put us under pressure from the start. When you lose three wickets in the power play, it always makes it tough. It was probably a 180-190 wicket.”

With the fourth T20 match scheduled for Thursday at 2:30 AM NZT in Visakhapatnam, the Black Caps must regroup quickly to avoid a series whitewash and regain their competitive edge as they look ahead to the upcoming T20 World Cup.
