Sam Ruthe Shatters Mile World Record for 16-Year-Olds
Running prodigy Sam Ruthe has made history by becoming the fastest 16-year-old to run the mile, achieving a remarkable time of 3 minutes, 53.36 seconds at the Cooks Classic in Whanganui on March 2, 2024. This performance eclipsed the previous world record held by Australia’s Cam Myers and marks a significant milestone in the young athlete’s burgeoning career.
Ruthe’s impressive feat took place during a competitive event where he was narrowly bested by his training partner and two-time Olympian, Sam Tanner. Tanner surged ahead in the final stretch, defending his title in the national men’s senior mile with a time that matched Ruthe’s record-breaking pace. The dynamic between the two athletes has been pivotal, as Tanner has consistently pushed Ruthe to excel in various races, including a recent thrilling 800-meter race where Ruthe edged out Tanner just a week prior.
“It feels incredible. That was my goal coming into this race. I was trying to beat Tanner as well, but as soon as the gun started, I just wanted to run as fast as possible,” Ruthe shared with TVNZ. His commentary reflects a focused determination, noting that leading part of the race was essential for him. Ruthe aims to further improve his time in upcoming competitions.
Both athletes are set to travel to the United States next week, where Ruthe plans to compete in four indoor mile races over successive weekends. He believes that these races will be crucial for his development as an athlete. With his latest achievement, Ruthe now ranks seventh on the all-time list of New Zealand milers, surpassing the legendary Sir Peter Snell.
Additional highlights from the event included impressive performances from sprinters Tiaan Whelpton and Zoe Hobbs, who claimed the men’s and women’s 100-meter titles, respectively, with wind-assisted times. Meanwhile, Ireland’s Laura Nicholson also showcased her talent, winning the women’s mile in a time of 4 minutes, 43.75 seconds.
As Ruthe and Tanner continue their training and competition journey, the athletics community will undoubtedly keep a close watch on their progress, with Ruthe’s record-setting performance serving as a testament to his potential and determination in the world of track and field.
