Stewart Dodson Reflects on Swiss Team’s Growth Ahead of Auckland SailGP
Stewart Dodson returns to Auckland as part of the Swiss SailGP team, marking a significant turnaround for the squad after a challenging previous season. Last year, Dodson celebrated his victory with the Spanish team, becoming the only Kiwi to win the SailGP season four championship. Following this success, he transitioned to Switzerland, where the team had struggled, finishing at the bottom of the leaderboard. Now, as they prepare for the upcoming race, Dodson is optimistic about their progress.
The Swiss team has shown remarkable improvement during the current season, earning two top-three finishes, a stark contrast to their earlier performances where they failed to reach the podium in their first two seasons. “We were building on everything all season and we felt like we kept improving throughout the year,” Dodson said in an interview. “Everything’s not linear when you’re improving; there are ups and downs for sure, but we definitely felt like we’re on the right trajectory.”
Team Dynamics and Future Aspirations
Dodson’s role as a grinder in the Swiss power unit has been pivotal in the team’s resurgence. His experience and insights gained from competing at the highest levels have contributed to a renewed focus within the squad. As the team gears up for the next race in Auckland, they aim to build on their recent successes and continue to engage fans and sponsors alike.
The SailGP series has become a platform for teams to showcase their talent and foster international competition. With the 2026 season on the horizon, the Swiss team is not only looking to solidify their position within the league but also to enhance their visibility and connection with the sailing community. Dodson emphasized the importance of engagement, particularly highlighting the influence of rising star Zoe Hobbs, who has captured the attention of fans and media alike.
The upcoming Auckland event is set to be a critical milestone for Dodson and his team. As they prepare to race in front of a home crowd, the pressure to perform is palpable. “Racing in Auckland is always special for me, and I believe the team is ready to show what we can do,” Dodson stated.
In the fast-paced world of SailGP, where competition is fierce and the stakes are high, the Swiss team’s journey reflects a combination of resilience and strategic growth. As they look ahead to the rest of the season and beyond, there is a sense of optimism that they can not only compete but thrive within the league.
