Warriors Dominate Raiders 40-6 with Halasima’s Stellar Performance

The NZ Warriors triumphed over the Canberra Raiders with a decisive score of 40-6 during their second match of the NRL season. Emerging star Leka Halasima showcased his talent by scoring two tries and demonstrating significant defensive skills, further solidifying his coach Andrew Webster‘s confidence in him.

Halasima’s performance came as a surprise, as he was initially set to come off the interchange bench. However, following an injury to veteran second-rower Kurt Capewell during warm-ups, Halasima was thrust into the starting lineup. His first try occurred in the 49th minute when he capitalized on a kick from halfback Tanah Boyd. Halasima’s second came shortly thereafter, as he showcased his agility and strength, brushing off a defender to score.

Coach Webster expressed his pride in Halasima’s adaptability and determination, noting, “He got a minute’s notice, knuckled down, scored two tries, but his tackling, his defence, his effort areas were the best parts of his game.” This victory marks a significant moment for the Warriors, who have now started their 2026 campaign with back-to-back wins, a feat they have achieved only three times in their history.

Halasima’s impressive stats included a total of 35 tackles and 114 running metres, which places him among the competition’s leading try-scorers with three in just two games. Boyd also shone in his role, contributing a try, five conversions, and two assists, confirming his value to the team as he fills in for Luke Metcalf.

The Warriors’ defence was formidable, allowing the Raiders minimal scoring opportunities after the opening try from fullback Kaeo Weekes. As the match progressed, the Warriors took control, scoring 34 unanswered points in the second half. Halasima’s interception and subsequent try early in the second half proved pivotal, shifting the momentum firmly in favour of the Warriors.

Webster highlighted the importance of their game plan, saying, “We spoke about how well they offload the ball and just to stay up. Ali [Leiataua] was up and made his own luck there. Awesome.”

The match wasn’t without its challenges for the Warriors. Injuries plagued the team, with Chanel Harris-Tavita leaving the field early due to a head injury, and James Fisher-Harris undergoing a concussion check before returning to play. Webster noted that the team’s ability to remain calm and adapt during these disruptions illustrated their resilience.

Looking ahead, the Warriors will face the Newcastle Knights, who also had a strong season opener. With their current form, the Warriors aim to maintain their winning streak and continue building on their impressive start to the season.
