Wellington Phoenix Secures 2-0 Victory Against Sydney FC
Wellington Phoenix achieved a surprising 2-0 victory over second-placed Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium on March 10, 2024. Goals from Carlo Armiento and Isaac Hughes secured the win, extending the Phoenix’s unbeaten streak to three matches and narrowing the gap to A-League Men leaders Auckland FC to six points.
The match turned in the Phoenix’s favour when Sydney midfielder Rhys Youlley received a red card just before halftime for a reckless tackle on Ramy Najjarine. The dismissal left Sydney with ten players and forced them to adapt their strategy while chasing the game.
New signing Bill Tuiloma made an impactful debut, coming off the bench in the 75th minute. His experience is seen as crucial as he aims for a spot in coach Darren Bazeley’s World Cup squad, having returned to New Zealand after over a decade playing in Europe and the United States. Coach Giancarlo Italiano opted for a back four for the first time this season, a decision that paid off as the Phoenix’s defence held firm.
The Phoenix opened the scoring in the 29th minute when Armiento’s free kick deflected off the Sydney wall, catching goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares off-guard. Hughes then added a second goal in the 63rd minute, heading in a cross from captain Alex Rufer. His celebration, which involved kicking a corner flag emblazoned with the Sydney FC logo, ignited frustration among the home crowd.
Despite the absence of regular goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi, who remains sidelined, 18-year-old Eamonn McCarron delivered a commendable performance, securing his second clean sheet in five matches. McCarron showcased his skills with a vital save against Tiago Quintal and exhibited bravery when claiming the ball under pressure from Ben Garrucio.
As the match neared its conclusion, Sydney believed they had scored a consolation goal in stoppage time, but it was correctly ruled offside. This victory not only bolstered the Phoenix’s position, moving them up to eighth place and just two points from the top six, but also served to hinder Sydney FC’s title aspirations, which would have seen them take the lead in the standings had they won.
The Phoenix’s recent form has been promising, with seven points from their last three matches. The addition of Tuiloma and fellow new signing Sander Kartum, combined with the return of key players like Tim Payne, Paulo Retre, and Nikola Mileusnic from injury, has strengthened the squad significantly.
Looking ahead, Wellington Phoenix faces a quick turnaround with a match against the Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on March 15, 2024. The Jets, currently in third place, defeated the Phoenix 3-1 in their previous encounter in December. A win for Wellington could see them leap into the top four, further solidifying their resurgence in the league.
