The Wellington Phoenix women’s team achieved a convincing 3-0 victory over the Western Sydney Wanderers at Wanderers Football Park on March 5, 2025. This win marks the Phoenix’s first away victory in 355 days and solidifies their impressive form, having now scored ten goals over their last two matches.

Nepalese striker Sabitra Bhandari played a pivotal role in the match, netting one goal and providing two assists. The Phoenix, under the guidance of coach Bev Priestman, capitalized on their recent success, following a record 7-0 drubbing of Sydney FC. In contrast, the Wanderers were coming off a heavy 5-2 defeat against Adelaide United, which set the stage for the Phoenix to take full advantage.

The atmosphere at the stadium was electric, with a significant number of Phoenix supporters in attendance. Their cheers for Bhandari echoed throughout the ground as the two teams took to the pitch. The match began with an explosive start for the visitors, as Emma Main scored just seven minutes in, converting a cross from Bhandari after an aggressive turnover near the Wanderers’ goal.

The second half saw the Phoenix maintain their momentum. Bhandari extended the lead in the 48th minute with a powerful strike, marking her third goal in two matches. Just five minutes later, she assisted Main for her second goal of the night, showcasing a dynamic partnership that proved instrumental in the team’s success.

With this victory, the Phoenix have surged from ninth to fourth place in the A-League Women standings. They now sit six points behind league leaders Canberra United, having played two fewer matches. The defensive line, featuring Ellie Walker, Mackenzie Barry, and Marisa van der Meer, has been particularly effective, allowing only four shots on target across their last four games.

New signing Emma Pijnenburg made her debut in the second half after joining from Dutch club Feyenoord. She replaced captain CJ Bott, who was substituted as a precaution after sustaining a minor knee injury while the team led comfortably.

The Phoenix’s last victory on Australian soil was also against the Wanderers back on January 9, 2025. Following that win, they faced a challenging stretch, suffering nine consecutive losses. Now, with a renewed sense of confidence, they aim to build on this success.

Looking ahead, the Phoenix will attempt to secure their third consecutive win when they face the Brisbane Roar at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe on March 8, 2025. This upcoming match will be part of a double header, featuring both the women’s and men’s teams in action.

As the season progresses, the Phoenix are proving to be a formidable force in the league, and their latest triumph underscores their potential to contend for a strong finish this season.
