Wellington Phoenix Thrash Wanderers 3-0, Extend Winning Streak
At Wanderers Football Park in Sydney, the Wellington Phoenix delivered a commanding performance, defeating the Western Sydney Wanderers 3-0 on Tuesday night. This victory marked the Phoenix’s first away win in over a year, ending a 355-day drought since their last triumph on Australian soil.
Nepalese striker Sabitra Bhandari played a pivotal role in the match, scoring one goal and providing two assists. Under the guidance of coach Bev Priestman, the Phoenix capitalized on their recent momentum, following a staggering 7-0 victory over Sydney FC. The Wanderers, conversely, were coming off a heavy 5-2 defeat to Adelaide United, presenting an ideal opportunity for the Phoenix to secure points.
The match began with an electric atmosphere as a significant number of Phoenix supporters filled the stands, creating a vibrant backdrop for Bhandari and her teammates. Emma Main set the tone early, scoring within the first seven minutes after converting Bhandari’s initial shot. This early goal helped the Phoenix establish control, pressing high and forcing mistakes from the Wanderers.
The second half started similarly, with Bhandari doubling the lead in the 48th minute. After a deflected cross from Brooke Nunn, Bhandari found the back of the net for her third goal in just two matches. Five minutes later, she assisted Main again, who secured her brace, solidifying the Phoenix’s advantage.
With this win, the Phoenix climbed from ninth to fourth place in the league, re-entering the playoff spots. They are now six points behind Canberra United, although they have two games in hand. The defensive unit, featuring Ellie Walker, Mackenzie Barry, and Marisa van der Meer, maintained their impressive form, allowing only one shot on target throughout the match.
This victory is particularly significant as it ends a long streak of away losses for the Phoenix, who had not won in Australia since their previous 3-0 victory over the Wanderers on January 9, 2025. The team will look to build on this success as they prepare to face Brisbane Roar at Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe on Saturday. This match represents an opportunity for the Phoenix to secure three consecutive wins for the first time since the 2023-24 season.
New signing Emma Pijnenburg, who joined the Phoenix from Dutch club Feyenoord, made her debut in the second half, replacing captain CJ Bott, who was withdrawn as a precaution after sustaining a minor injury.
As the Phoenix continue to improve their performance and secure crucial victories, they are poised to make a significant impact in the league moving forward.
