White Ferns Secure First World Cup Win Against Bangladesh

The New Zealand White Ferns achieved their first victory in the 2024 Women’s Cricket World Cup, defeating Bangladesh by 100 runs in Guwahati on March 15, 2024. Led by captain Sophie Devine, who scored a determined 63 runs, the White Ferns bounced back after suffering losses in their opening two matches against Australia and South Africa.

New Zealand faced significant challenges in their previous encounters, prompting the team to seek a turnaround against Bangladesh. Devine, who has been in remarkable form, partnered with Brooke Halliday to forge a crucial 112-run partnership. Halliday contributed a notable 69 runs, providing stability to the innings after the team had stumbled to a precarious 38 for 3.

Devine had struggled in her earlier matches, scoring 112 against Australia and 85 against South Africa, both in losing efforts. This time, her performance was pivotal in building a competitive total. Notably, Devine had to pause mid-innings to manage her Type 1 diabetes, taking a moment to check her blood sugar levels. “With diabetes, it’s always a bit of a balancing act,” she explained. “I had to take a few jelly beans and coke to get going. It wasn’t the prettiest innings but sometimes you’ve got to do it ugly.”

Her innings of 63 runs came from 85 balls, featuring two fours and two sixes. The veteran player Suzie Bates also found her rhythm, scoring 29 runs before being run out during a mix-up, just as she appeared to be settling into her stride.

In response, Bangladesh struggled to mount a credible challenge. Their top five batters were unable to reach double figures, with the team taking 15 overs to register their first boundary. Jess Kerr and Lea Tahuhu dominated with the ball, each claiming three wickets for 21 and 22 runs, respectively. Bangladesh’s innings folded with leg-spinner Fahima Khatun as the sole bright spot, top-scoring with 34 runs before falling to Eden Carson.

With this victory, New Zealand currently sits fifth in the eight-team table, just outside the semi-final spots but level on points with Bangladesh, who occupy sixth place. The White Ferns will now travel to Colombo, where they are set to face Sri Lanka and Pakistan before concluding their group stage matches against India and England in Visakhapatnam.

After the defeat, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana acknowledged her team’s shortcomings, stating, “Our batting is not consistent. The lower order has done a decent job, but the top order needs to shoulder more responsibility.” Bangladesh’s upcoming matches include encounters against South Africa and Australia in Visakhapatnam, followed by crucial games against Sri Lanka and India in Mumbai.
