30th Targa Rally Concludes Amid Challenges and Community Spirit
Participants of the **30th Targa Rally** successfully completed the challenging five-day racing event in New Zealand, which featured over **80 cars** racing across **900 kilometers** of closed roads. The rally, which took place from March 5 to March 9, 2024, showcased a diverse range of vehicles, including **Minis**, **Lamborghinis**, **Fords**, and **Holdens**. Despite facing adverse weather conditions and other obstacles, the competitors showcased resilience and camaraderie throughout the event.
Event director **Peter Martin** reflected on the difficulties encountered during the rally. He noted that competitors dealt with “all sorts of unforeseen activities, circumstances, and weather bombs.” This year marked a special occasion as the Targa Rally celebrated its **30th anniversary** with an extended course that began in **Pukekohe** and traversed through **Rotorua**, **Taranaki**, **Palmerston North**, and concluded in **Hawke’s Bay**.
Unexpected weather conditions posed significant challenges. On Tuesday, severe weather in Taranaki resulted in the closure of three state highways due to slips and flooding, prompting the rally organizers to implement a “plan B” to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. Additionally, on Friday, a competitor’s vehicle crashed and caught fire just south of Rotorua. Fortunately, Martin confirmed that the occupants were safe and recovering well.
As the event drew to a close, Martin acknowledged the toll the extended competition took on participants, remarking that many were “very tired” but eager to return to the standard course next year. He also expressed gratitude to the more than **750 volunteers** who played a crucial role in bringing the event to life, emphasizing the “warm, friendly nature of a New Zealander willing to help.”
Competitors hailed from various regions, including those from across the Tasman Sea and as far as **Japan**. Martin noted the community’s welcoming spirit, stating that everyone was “inviting, engaging, and absolutely fantastic.” The highlight of the event, according to Martin, was witnessing the “smiley faces” of the Hawke’s Bay community as they gathered to support the rally during stops along the route.
He also extended his thanks to the **15 regional councils** that hosted the competition throughout the week, acknowledging their support and contribution to the event’s success. “Just a huge thank you back to the communities for their support,” Martin said.
Despite the challenges faced, the **30th Targa Rally** not only celebrated motorsport but also highlighted the strength of community engagement and resilience among participants and supporters alike.
