Train services between Waitematā (Britomart) and Newmarket stations are suspended today, February 10, due to a track issue identified along the Southern and Western lines. Auckland Transport (AT) announced late yesterday that this disruption will affect operations from the start of service today, with trains unable to run on that segment.

The Southern line will continue to operate between Pukekohe and Newmarket, while the Western line services will run from Swanson to Newmarket. Both lines will see a reduced frequency, operating every 20 minutes instead of the usual 10-minute intervals. The Eastern line remains unaffected and will continue to operate normally to Waitematā.

For customers traveling to the city from south of Ōtāhuhu, AT advises transferring from the Southern line to the Eastern line at Ōtāhuhu station to reach Waitematā. Rail replacement buses will be available throughout the Western line. Additionally, passengers can transfer at Newmarket to the 70 or InnerLink buses from 7203 Stop A Newmarket to access Waitematā. Notably, these buses will accept train tickets, ensuring a smoother transition for commuters. The InnerLink bus route also services Parnell Station.

David Gordon, chief metro officer at KiwiRail, explained that the reduced schedule is due to the necessary closure of the Parnell rail tunnel. He stated, “KiwiRail has discovered some faulty track work carried out by contractors in the tunnel over the Waitangi Weekend network closure. We’re assessing the track overnight and will work as quickly as we can to make repairs. We appreciate how frustrating this is for Aucklanders. Safety is our first priority, and we will aim to have the tunnel reopened so that trains can run normally for the afternoon peak.”

Gordon also mentioned that KiwiRail is investigating the circumstances surrounding the faulty work. The focus remains on ensuring the safety of all rail operations while minimizing disruption to commuters. Further updates will be provided as the situation develops.
