Auckland’s Lagoon Edge Skatepark Transformed into Skater Haven

The Lagoon Edge Reserve skatepark in Panmure, Auckland, has undergone a significant transformation, evolving from a neglected facility into a vibrant hub for skaters. The renovation, completed in 2023, included the addition of a new quarterpipe and enhancements to existing ledges, rails, stairs, and ramps, addressing the needs of today’s skating community.

The upgrade also incorporated improved lighting, making it one of only three skateparks in Auckland that allows nighttime skating. This enhancement has garnered praise from local skaters, including Aaron Martin, a prominent figure in the Auckland skateboarding scene. Martin, who is the president of the East Skate Club Charity, expressed his enthusiasm for the improvements.

“The park’s been open again for a while, but the most recent upgrade which included lights … for us skaters, honestly, it is amazing,” Martin stated. The skatepark now features new seating, picnic tables, drinking fountains, public toilets, and a dedicated spectator area, all contributing to a more inviting environment.

The total cost of the project reached $5.4 million, reflecting a commitment to revitalizing recreational spaces for the community. Martin began advocating for the skatepark’s renewal in 2021 after noticing the facility’s poor condition and outdated design.

“But now, the concrete surface is smooth, all the obstacles now work because they’ve been rebuilt properly,” he noted. The transformation has turned what was once regarded as one of the worst skateparks in Auckland into a popular gathering place for skaters, now bustling with activity even at night.

“It’s used every single night now, without a doubt,” Martin added. The East Skate Club Charity, which he founded in 2020, aims to create safe spaces for youth interested in skating while advocating for better facilities.

On a recent Tuesday, Martin presented to the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board meeting, followed by a visit to the Franklin Local Board in Pukekohe to discuss further improvements for skate facilities. He emphasized the need for ongoing support from local authorities, noting that traditional sports often receive more attention and funding compared to skateparks.

“There are sports clubs, rugby fields, netball courts, who get renewed every year, money’s put into them, but skate parks, unfortunately, are forgotten about,” Martin explained. His advocacy has been driven by a desire to change this narrative and ensure that skateboarding is recognized as a legitimate sport deserving of investment.

The Lagoon Edge upgrade is seen as a milestone in Martin’s advocacy efforts, particularly because of its proximity to his community. He commended the local board and other partners for their responsiveness to skaters’ needs and their willingness to incorporate community feedback into the design.

“We were on a limited budget, so we couldn’t extend the footprint. But within the footprint, we took out everything that didn’t work and we replaced it with stuff that does work and it’s just a really, really amazing result,” Martin remarked.

The project was developed in collaboration with the council’s Parks and Community Facilities team, the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board, and the local iwi, Ngāti Pāoa. Local board chair Debbie Burrows expressed pride in the upgrade, emphasizing its importance for the community.

“We’re also excited for our Onehunga flow bowl skating facility that will open in late April. This site will cater for a wide range of ages and abilities and will be a welcome addition to the Onehunga Bay Reserve,” Burrows stated.

The successful transformation of the Lagoon Edge skatepark not only enhances recreational opportunities for local skaters but also serves as a model for how community engagement and advocacy can lead to meaningful improvements in public spaces. As the skateboarding community continues to grow in Auckland, the emphasis on creating accessible and well-maintained facilities remains a priority.
