Celebrating the Launch of “The Middle of Nowhere” on Manapōuri

The recent publication of The Middle of Nowhere: Stories of working in the Manapōuri hydro project by Rosemary Baird has garnered significant attention, being recognized as the best illustrated book of 2025. With the support of her editor, Anna Rogers, and guidance from the press’s team, Baird refined the book into its final form.

The launch event at the Canterbury University Bookshop was a personal highlight for Baird, who was thrilled to see an engaged audience eager to buy and discuss her work. The response from the public exceeded her expectations, and a modest reprint has already been ordered due to strong sales.

Reflecting on her journey, Baird expressed regret that some of her interviewees had passed away before witnessing the publication of their stories. Nonetheless, she remains grateful for the opportunity to share their experiences and the connections forged through oral history.
