Community Reacts as Howard Temple Appears at Local Market
A recent sighting of convicted sex offender Howard Temple at the Moana market, located near Lake Brunner on New Zealand’s West Coast, has ignited public outrage. Temple, a former leader of the controversial Gloriavale community, was present at the family-friendly event despite having pleaded guilty to 12 charges of sexual abuse involving six girls over a span of 20 years.
Temple, now aged 85, was sentenced in September 2023 to 26 months in prison but secured bail while awaiting the outcome of his appeal. The incident took place on Friday, where a bystander captured a photograph of Temple mingling with community members. A woman who is friends with some of Temple’s victims reported feeling distressed upon seeing him at the market. She expressed her concerns, stating, “I think it shows how out of touch Gloriavale is and how they can’t be trusted to make good decisions. It was grossly uncomfortable.”
Concerns about Temple’s presence at the event have also been echoed by former Gloriavale members. One individual questioned the judgment of the court, stating, “I don’t understand how the judge didn’t realise that adult supervision from a current Gloriavale member was a bad idea. After all, his offending occurred with other adults present and watching.”
Public sentiment suggests a growing unease regarding the leniency shown to individuals who have been convicted of serious offenses. As one community member put it, “It’s a strange justice system. It shows a lack of social etiquette, understanding, and consideration for others.”
According to 1News, Temple’s bail conditions mandate that he reside at a Gloriavale-owned property separate from the main compound. Prior to his sentencing, he had been permitted to return to the community for work and worship services. His lawyer, Michael Vesty, stated that Temple has not breached any bail conditions, clarifying that he is allowed to have contact with minors as long as it is supervised.
The Overseeing Shepherd of Gloriavale, Stephen Standfast, has been approached for comments regarding the community’s stance on Temple’s attendance at the market and the broader implications for community safety.
This incident raises critical questions about the balance between rehabilitation and community safety, and the expectations surrounding the monitoring of convicted offenders. As discussions continue, many are calling for a reassessment of the practices surrounding bail conditions and community reintegration for those with serious criminal histories.
