Crane Collapse Kills 19 as Train Derails in Thailand

Local authorities, including Police Colonel Thatchapon Chinnawong, reported that rescue teams have recovered 19 bodies from the wreckage. “There are still more bodies inside the train carriages that cannot be retrieved yet,” he stated in a phone call with Reuters. The crane, which was part of a high-speed rail project, collapsed unexpectedly, causing the train to derail and briefly ignite upon impact. Firefighters were seen extinguishing flames as smoke rose from the scene, with images shared by the Ministry of Transport depicting overturned carriages adjacent to shrubland.

Transport Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn confirmed that there were 195 passengers on board at the time of the incident. In response to the tragedy, he ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crane’s collapse.
