Fisherman Survives Week in Cave on Northland Coast with Bait
Cliff Barnes, a fisherman from Northland, New Zealand, survived a harrowing week trapped in a cave with only rotting bait for sustenance. His ordeal began when he became separated from his fishing group during a trip on September 10, 2023. After failing to return home, concerns for his safety prompted a search operation by local authorities.
Barnes, 37, ventured into the rugged coastal regions of Northland, known for its challenging conditions. When he did not return, friends and family alerted the authorities, leading to an extensive search by Coastguard New Zealand. As rescuers scoured the area, they focused on potential locations where he might have sought shelter.
After several days of searching, the effort intensified as time slipped away. Rescuers faced harsh weather conditions and treacherous terrain, complicating their mission. According to Coastguard New Zealand, search teams utilized drones and aerial support to cover vast stretches of coastline and identify possible locations.
On September 17, 2023, rescuers finally found Barnes in a secluded cave along the coast. He was weak but alive, having survived on little more than rotting fish bait. His survival is attributed to his resourcefulness and knowledge of the area, which he had fished for years.
Barnes shared details of his experience, describing the cave as dark and damp, yet it provided critical shelter from the elements. “It was a battle against my own mind and the hunger,” he recounted. His ability to remain calm and focused was pivotal in enduring the harsh conditions.
In the aftermath, Barnes has expressed gratitude to the search and rescue teams who worked tirelessly to find him. He praised their efforts, stating, “Without them, I wouldn’t be here today.” His story serves as a powerful reminder of the risks fishermen face and the importance of safety measures while at sea.
Coastguard New Zealand reported that this incident highlights the necessity of preparation and communication among fishing groups. They urge all outdoor enthusiasts to carry emergency supplies and inform someone of their plans before heading out.
As Barnes recovers from his ordeal, he plans to return to fishing but is determined to prioritize safety above all. His experience has reshaped his perspective on the risks associated with the sea, reinforcing the need for caution and awareness.
