Four New Councillors Elected in Gore: A Fresh Start for Community
The recent elections in Gore have ushered in significant change with the appointment of four new councillors. Torrone Smith, Mel Culpit, Nicky Coats, and Donna Bruce have each secured their positions, promising to address pressing local issues and represent their communities effectively.
Torrone Smith: A Surreal Victory
Torrone Smith emerged as a leading candidate, receiving over 2,900 votes. The property and financial adviser expressed his overwhelming gratitude for the support he garnered during the campaign. “It feels surreal and pretty overwhelming,” Smith stated, reflecting on the trust placed in him by the community. He acknowledged the responsibility that comes with his new role, emphasizing his commitment to serving the community over the next three years.
Smith highlighted the challenges he plans to tackle, including local infrastructure and financial matters. He noted the rising rates affecting households and businesses, stating, “It’s about minimizing impact where we can.” His approach focuses on balancing necessary investments with the affordability of living in Gore.
Mel Culpit: A Fresh Perspective
Mel Culpit secured 2,158 preliminary votes, a result she described as “unbelievable.” Having worked in the agricultural sector, she sought to bring a fresh perspective to the council. Culpit expressed her commitment to fiscal discipline, stating, “The council needs to look at its spending and do the basics well.” She aims to represent the community by advocating for smart spending that aligns with the financial realities faced by residents.
Culpit’s excitement about her election was palpable. “It feels like it’s been a long slog,” she said, referring to her campaign efforts. Now, she is ready to bring her “common sense” approach to decision-making, ensuring that the needs of the community are prioritized.
Nicky Coats: From Community Board to Council
Nicky Coats transitions from her role as chairwoman of the Mataura Community Board to become the new Mataura ward councillor. Her prior experience in local governance equips her for this new challenge. Coats expressed satisfaction with her previous work, stating, “I’ve been really pleased with the projects completed to help the town.”
With significant projects on her agenda, she plans to collaborate with the Railway Heritage Society to revitalize the Mataura Railway Station. Coats also intends to advocate for improved local infrastructure, emphasizing the need for better roads and footpaths. “Our community board needs more delegation regarding long-term plans,” she pointed out, highlighting her commitment to community engagement.
Donna Bruce: An Advocate for Change
Donna Bruce, a founding member of the Gore Rates Reform Group, received 1,350 votes in her bid for council. Her involvement in local politics stems from her concern about rising rates and affordability. “I’ve always tried to be a bit of a warrior for those who can’t defend themselves,” Bruce stated, indicating her dedication to advocating for her community.
Despite the controversy surrounding her group, Bruce feels optimistic about working collaboratively with her fellow councillors. “I hope we can all work well as a team. We want to get out of the hole we’re in,” she noted, emphasizing her willingness to listen and learn in her new role.
The elections signal a shift in governance for the Gore region, with these four new councillors prepared to take on the challenges ahead. Their diverse backgrounds and experiences promise to bring renewed energy and focus to the council table as they address the needs and concerns of their constituents.
