India Tops New Zealand by Four Wickets in World Cup Warm-Up
India secured a convincing victory over New Zealand’s White Ferns by four wickets in a World Cup warm-up match held in Bengaluru on March 15, 2024. This defeat marks New Zealand’s second consecutive loss in their preparation for the tournament.
In a rain-affected encounter shortened to 42 overs, New Zealand opted to bat first, managing to score 232 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Captain Sophie Devine played a pivotal role in the innings, scoring a steady 54 runs. She received support from Amelia Kerr, who contributed 40 runs, and Maddy Green, who remained unbeaten with 49 runs. India’s left-arm spinner Shree Charani proved to be a standout performer, taking three wickets and applying pressure on the New Zealand batting lineup.
India’s chase began strongly, with Harleen Deol leading the scoring with a retired score of 74. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur also made a significant contribution, scoring 69 runs. Although the team experienced a late collapse, losing four quick wickets, they successfully reached their target with eight balls to spare. New Zealand’s Bree Illing was a bright spot in the bowling attack, claiming two wickets alongside Jess Kerr, who also took two wickets.
Following the match, Green reflected on the team’s performance, acknowledging the disappointment of the loss but emphasizing the positive aspects. “Disappointing not to get over the line, but the encouraging thing is we’re seeing some really good signs from the squad. Sophie batted brilliantly, and Breezy’s spell was excellent. We’re looking forward to our first game against Australia,” she stated.
This match follows New Zealand’s earlier defeat to India A in their first warm-up fixture, raising concerns about their form ahead of the World Cup. The White Ferns are now set to face Australia in their tournament opener, which will take place in Indore on March 20, 2024. As they prepare for this crucial encounter, the team will need to build on the positives from their recent matches to enhance their performance in the upcoming competition.
