Kiwis Celebrate International Hobbit Day in Stunning Hobbiton
As New Zealanders face rising airfares and a declining local currency, many are opting for staycations this festive season. One popular destination is Hobbiton, the iconic film set from “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies. On September 22, 2023, fans gathered at Hobbiton to celebrate International Hobbit Day, a day that marks the shared birthdays of beloved characters Bilbo and Frodo Baggins.
Organised by local costumers Rozanne and Paul de Wild, the event attracted a diverse group of enthusiasts, all dressed in character. While waiting at the information centre in Matamata, the sight of these costumed fans caught the attention of local police. Fortunately, instead of any reprimand, the officers took photos, embracing the festive spirit.
The group then boarded a Hobbit bus, leaving behind the chilly and rainy weather of Matamata for the enchanting valley of Hobbiton. Visitors often remark on the authenticity of Hobbiton, which contrasts sharply with many other film sets. As attendees entered the picturesque valley, they were greeted by vibrant gardens and the charming Hobbit houses, which, although primarily exteriors, create an immersive experience.
Unlike standard tours, the International Hobbit Day celebration allowed attendees to explore the grounds at a leisurely pace. Visitors ambled through the gardens until they reached Bagshot Row, where some Hobbit homes now feature interiors. This added layer of detail captivated guests, making them yearn for such a whimsical lifestyle. According to the guide, some items from the set had to be glued down to prevent theft, highlighting the immense popularity of this unique attraction.
After reluctantly leaving the Hobbit Hole, guests made their way to the Green Dragon Inn, where they enjoyed cider and a variety of food stalls. The evening was filled with laughter and camaraderie as they celebrated their shared love for the franchise. As the rain subsided and lights illuminated the venue, the atmosphere transformed into a scene right out of the films. Guests indulged in drinks and festive dishes, fully embracing the Hobbit lifestyle as they dreamed of future adventures.
For those interested in upcoming events at Hobbiton, further details can be found on their official website at www.hobbitontours.com. This celebration not only showcases the beauty of New Zealand but also highlights the enduring legacy of J.R.R. Tolkien’s work, drawing fans from both the local community and beyond.
