Memorial Wall Honors Legacy of Kiwi Aviators at Wanaka Airport

A new memorial wall dedicated to aviators will be unveiled at Wanaka Airport, honouring the contributions and sacrifices of at least 30 pilots and aviation workers. This initiative, championed by former Warbirds over Wanaka commentator and museum director Ian Brodie, aims to commemorate the memories of individuals ranging from World War II veterans to young helicopter pilots, whose loss continues to resonate within the community.

The memorial wall will be situated in front of the Crosswinds Cafe at the airport. It will feature name plaques alongside QR codes that link to short biographies and a memorial book available on the Wanaka Airport website. Funded by Queenstown Airport Corporation, the circular wall was designed and constructed by a local stonemason, with its concept originating from former Wanaka Airport manager Ralph Fegan.

Jools Hall, founder of Skydive Lake Wanaka and widow of a late aviator featured on the wall, expressed her enthusiasm for the memorial’s opening. She noted, “These are stories of amazing aviators. I feel really pleased that it is going to be a permanent reminder for the aviators at Wanaka Airport.” Hall emphasized the significance of the memorial space, stating, “It’s a beautiful and permanent space at Wanaka Airport which holds so many memories and history.”

The initiative not only serves as a tribute but also invites community involvement. Hall encouraged families of aviators to submit names for inclusion, acknowledging the challenge of tracking down families who may have moved away. Currently, there are two plaques on the wall, with two more anticipated to be added in the coming week. Hall remarked, “It’s brilliant we are building from there.”

The memorial wall is expected to officially open later this year, providing a lasting tribute to those who have made significant contributions to aviation in the Wanaka region. As the community prepares for the unveiling, the wall stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of those who have served and shaped the aviation landscape in New Zealand.
