New Ferries Set for 2029 as Government Saves $2.3 Billion
The New Zealand government has announced a significant financial achievement, saving $2.3 billion in the process of acquiring new Cook Strait ferries, which are expected to arrive in 2029. This news was shared by Chris Mackenzie, Chair of Ferry Holdings Limited, during an interview with Ryan Bridge on the Early Edition Full Show Podcast on November 20, 2025.
In addition to the ferry announcement, a recent Education Review Office (ERO) report revealed that while a ban on cellphones in schools is proving effective, compliance remains an issue. Approximately half of high school students are reportedly not adhering to the rules. Steve McCracken, Principal of Whangapaeroa College and a member of the B416 expert advisory panel, discussed the implications of this finding, emphasizing the need for ongoing efforts to encourage adherence among students.
In another significant development, the New Zealand government has prohibited the prescription of puberty blockers for new patients. Sue Bagshaw, Senior Clinical Lecturer at the Christchurch School of Medicine at the University of Otago Christchurch, provided insights into the potential impact of this policy change, noting that it could have far-reaching effects on the health and well-being of transgender youth seeking medical support.
The podcast also featured Toni Waterman, the US Correspondent, who provided updates on the ongoing controversy surrounding the Epstein files. Additionally, Nicki Minaj made headlines by publicly supporting former President Donald Trump in his claims that Christians are facing persecution in Nigeria.
Listeners can access the Early Edition Full Show Podcast every weekday on iHeartRadio or through various podcast platforms to stay informed on these critical issues and more. The discussions reflect a broad spectrum of current events that impact both New Zealand and the international community.
