New Zealand’s $1 Billion Convention Centre Opens After 11-Year Journey

The long-awaited opening of the $1 billion New Zealand International Convention Centre took place today, marking the culmination of an 11-year journey filled with challenges and delays. During the ceremony, Andrew Reding, chief executive of Fletcher Building, joined representatives from Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to perform a traditional welcome chant, setting a culturally rich tone for the event.

Guests gathered at the venue, which features 475 kauri forest-inspired glass panels crafted by artist Sara Hughes. The ceremony was officiated by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, who underscored the significance of the centre for New Zealand’s economy and tourism sectors.
